The history of bobsledding dates back to 1888, when Briton Wilson Smith, traveling through Switzerland, decided to connect two pairs of sledges and descended on an impromptu carriage down an icy track. At the end of the 19th century, a bobsleigh club was registered in the popular Swiss resort of St. Moritz, where the first rules were developed. Then the crew consisted of three men and two women, over time the regulations changed, and even eight people performed. Today, competitions are held separately in the men’s and women’s categories of “twos” and “fours”.

With the advent of the 20th century, bobsleigh began to spread across the European continent, but took root only in a few countries. Usually, this is a mountainous area where the appropriate conditions for training and competitions are created. Bobsleigh appeared in the post-Soviet space in the 70s of the last century in Latvia – Balkan athletes managed to win the “bronze” and “gold” of the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games. in the “twos”, respectively, and the bronze medal of the Olympic Games-1988 in the “fours”.
In 1924, the first ever bobsleigh world championship was held. In the same year, he was included in the program of the Olympic Games, but only men performed. Women bobsledders began to compete only in the 90s of the 20th century.

In addition to the Olympics and the world championship, the World Cup is held annually, which consists of 7-9 stages. The favorites of all official bobsleigh competitions are representatives of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, but recently they have been seriously competing with athletes from the USA and Canada.
Official competitions are held in series of two races each. The time shown by the crews on their results forms the final protocol. Tracks 1.5-2 kilometers long are overcome quickly. At the finish line, the leaders are often separated by 0.1 seconds or less, which adds elegance to the bobsleigh.
